The weekly chat posts are intended for just that, chatting among each other. What are you currently watching? Reading? What actor/idol are you currently following? What are you looking forward to? Are you busy writing, creating art? Or did you have no time at all for anything, and are bemoaning that fact?

Whatever it is, talk to us about it here. Tell us what you liked or didn't like, and if you want to talk about spoilery things, please hide them under either of these codes:

There are certain expectations when you compare something to Mulan, whether it is the original Ballad of Mulan from the 6th century, the 1998 Disney animated film, or the 2020 Disney live action film. It is not just a tale of crossdressing or a woman leading an army—it entails filial piety, patriotism, and honor that comes with protecting a country that has more continuous history than most regions can imagine. This set up some expectations when I went into She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan, and unfortunately none of those expectations were met.

I finished MisVil today and posted a review on my journal:

Mistakenly Saving the Villain by Feng Yu Nie

It was definitely an interesting read but it's Heavy and deals with Heavy stuff. While I didn't always agree with the author, I appreciated a c-novel where sexual violence is treated as a violation instead of a profound proclamation of love.

Have some more thoughts about media!

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girlvol 1-2 by Ryan North, Erica Henderson, et al— Remember last time when I was like “maybe I should reread Squirrel Girl”? Well I decided to go for it and that was a great idea, thanks past me. These are so much fun! I enjoy Doreen’s unconventional approach to problem solving and her general enthusiasm for everything! I’m also glad that they kept the letters sections in the collected volumes – I love getting to see all the cute cosplay and squirrel pictures.

(Reading this had made me think about the were a bunch of girl centric fun comics around 2015. I wish that trend had continued)

Lumberjanes: True Colors by Lilah Sturges, polterink, et al— The final Lumberjanes graphic novel. Pretty cute, though I do feel that these graphic novels aren’t as good overall as the main series.

Mamo by Sas Milledge— I really liked this fantasy graphic novel about two young women trying to deal with a town where the magic has gone wrong. The art was so good! Lots of big sweeping landscapes, but also great details. Lots of excellent birds too!

Batman: No Man's Land and Batgirls )

Still in the process of deciding what to do with my computer - the one whose hard drive died earlier in the week. (Well, I'm pretty sure it's dead.)

If I do end up getting something entirely new, I'm not sure what kind of specifications I should look for. Typically I get the most beefed-up laptop that I can afford and then run it until it dies. This previous one lasted seven years, and the one before that lasted ten and a half. So, I guess you could say I had expected to get about three more years out of this thing. (And it was running totally fine until a few days ago!)

...Come to think of it, if I just replace the hard drive, I'll also have to do research on that because it's not like you can just buy any old drive and plop it in and expect it to work, right? It's never that simple. :Va

Right now I'm using the small notebook with Linux Mint installed on it, the one I use for travel. And like... it's fine, I do love it, but definitely not optimal for extended everyday use, since it's pretty tiny.

1. What is a common ear worm that you get?

2. How long do they last?

3. What do you do to get rid of them?

4. What is the worst ear worm you've ever had?

5. Do you get some guilty pleasure in passing the ear worm along?

Today was day 2 of Edmonton - or rather the only actual day in the city, since I'm going home in the morning.

The weather was even more miserable than yesterday; tons of snow, very cold. Eew.

I headed out early to a cafe so I could have a coffee and write fic, then headed to the bookstore after that to poke around a little and kill time. Then I hopped the bus to go to the Art Gallery of Alberta.

All of the exhibits have changed since I was last there, so that was neat. The work that made the biggest impression was a series of sculptures made of very delicate materials, like paper and heads of wheat, strung together with wires and fishing line and suspended from the ceiling. Do I understand it? Nah. Was it interesting to look at? Sure bet.

As for this evening, and the reason I'm here in the first place... the concert! That is, The Goo Goo Dolls with Dashboard Confessional.

I'm not very familiar with Dashboard Confessional at all; the only song that I recognized from their set was "Hands Down". But their style in general took me back to a very specific time, and not going to lie, I kind of dig it. Might need to look up more of their work later.

The Goo Goo Dolls were awesome! It's been a while since I've listened to them, so I wasn't familiar with their newer work, but it was all good, and they played a ton of the classics. Loved it when they played "Black Balloon", that's always a good one. The energy was really awesome, and I'm so glad I opted to come.

And of course, the crowd went nuts when they played "Iris". Naturally.

These guys are like... Even though I haven't put one of their albums in my CD player in a while, I still really really like their music. It's partially nostalgia, sure - takes me to a version of myself that I'm still trying to get back to - but also I think a lot of their work is genuinely good. If I had to make a list of bands whose work was important to me, The Goo Goo Dolls would probably be on it, right up there with Our Lady Peace.

I can't really think of anything else to say at the moment, except that I'm really happy that I took the time to come down here for this. So, I'll just copy over the setlist. Maybe when I have some time later, I'll look up the songs that are new to me.
